515 Week 2

I thought the 20thingsilearned was an interesting little book. Some of the stuff mentioned in it seemed like pretty basic stuff at first, but then I realized just how much stuff there is out there on the internet and what all goes into something as simple as a web address. There is also a lot out there that can harm your computer or steal things from you, like your identity, so it was good to learn more about malware and phishing.

I currently have all my documents, pictures, pretty much anything I have saved digitally to either my hard drive or to some sort of portable drive, (I have two jump drives that have pretty much anything I've saved in the last three years or so, and then I still have some 3.5 inch floppy disks that have some real old stuff on it--none of which I really use anymore). I should probably save some of the more important stuff to a cloud app, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Plus, all my pictures are taking up a lot of space both on my hard drive and in my jump drives.

I have been a dedicated google user so far in my online life and I really don't plan on switching from it for my searching needs. I almost always am able to find what I need in a very short period of time, but it is nice to see what else is out there and know that I at least have options.

  1. You sound just like I did just over a month ago. I backed up most of my stuff on a jump drive, but nothing else. If you want to save stuff on the cloud, I recommend Mozy home. It costs about 100 dollars every 2 years or $4.95 a month. It backs up your files automatically and there is not limit to how much you can back up.

You also sound like me when it comes to search preferences. I have used Google exclusively in the past and probably won't change. However, I did find some interesting alternatives and may use them once in a while. But Google works for me most of the time, so I really don't know why I would totally move away from using it.

  2. I also use a lot of things Google has to offer. I am happy with what I use and I do not plan to change either. However, another thing that cause my attention in your blog was using a cloud. I am not at all familiar with this. What is a cloud and do you have a specific one you are thinking of using?

  3. I forgot to mention the "little book" in my blog, but like you said Andy, there is a lot of stuff out there that I really didn't know about. I have heard about a lot of it, but didn't really know what it was, like cookies and bandwidth.

Like you, everything I have done in the LMS course is on a couple of flash drives. I am getting really paranoid about losing those things, especially the one we got from Stritch. That has EVERYTHING.

Ditto on Google. I will probably forever and always use it. It gets me what I want very quickly.

  4. I liked the 20 Things...book as well because it really opened my eyes to how important it is to keep your web browser up to date. I found it to be easy to understand, particularly from a non-technical perspective.

I, too, used to save everything to my hard drive and jump drives but found that jump drives are easy to lose and hard drives can crash. I set up a drop box using the cloud technology and I really like it. I think it is super easy to use and I'm trying to get my coworkers to get set up with that as well. It's worth looking into!

  5. I have 4 flashdrives that have most of my documents on. (My pictures are on Walgreens) The math teacher at my school thinks Dropbox is the best thing since sliced bread. I'm not sold on it, but I do see the benefits. I am using google docs for more and more. I still haven't found anything that I think is wonderful.
