Week 5

What we are studying so far has had some impact on my teaching. I think it will have more effect down the road. I only teach my library skills class for a 3.5 week period to five different groups of sixth graders throughout the year. That does not give me very much time to cover many different things and I haven't had much of a chance to implement what I have been learning, but I will try next year. A major part of my class is dedicated to using voicethread for their final project which I learned in a previous class in my practicum. It helps students bring together everything they have learned in our time together. I would love to incorporate google sites into my curriculum for the future but that would take some discussion with higher-ups in my district.

In terms of my library work for my job, I've already incorporated google calendars into my school by moving all the reservations for the library, library computer lab, and school computer lab to that format. I have also had a discussion with our technology coordinator about using google docs in the district and he sounded interested and mentioned that there had been discussion about implementing it earlier but nobody really knew much about it. Also, just this week a teacher asked about websites that could be used for students to create their own websites and I suggested google sites to her. I just have to find out if our students are able to access google sites or if they'll be blocked. Plus, they probably would have to have some form of gmail to access it.

  1. I can see the benefit of google calendar for reserving the library. We currently have to go to the library and reserve time on a log in the binder. At this time I can't think of any ways to use google sites. What are some of the ways you're thinking of using it? At this time my students don't have gmail accounts and don't have access, but I'd like some ideas in case that ever changes.

  2. I think it is really great that you have incorporated so much into your job already even though you are not there too much! I too have thought about incorporating goolgesites into my curriculum. Do you give homework in library? I know at our school they do sometimes. This might be one way you could incorporate googlesites into your job.

  3. Andy, I wrote about that same question in my blog this week, about making a Google site for my students. I'm wondering if it is possible to make a new Google account that I could use at school just for my students. If I give them all the password, would they be able to access the work and add comments and stuff? What do you think?

  4. Voice thread is a wonderful tool. I have used it for may classes but have not used it in my library classes yet. i think it is great that you are using the calendar for scheduling, that way teachers do not have to walk down to the library tocheck. Just don't be a hard nose, i had a librarian once that wouldn't let me use the library when it was free because i did not sign up ahead!
